30 Years Since the Dissolution of the USSR. The Impact on the Former States of the Communist Camp

On Friday, 17 December 2021, New Strategy Center organized the fourth debate of the series dedicated to 30 years since the dissolution of the USSR.
The debate ”30 Years Since the Dissolution of the USSR. The Impact on the Former States of the Communist Camp”, addressed the assessments and perception of events at that time in the countries of the former Warsaw Treaty. Their progress toward democracy and toward the Euro-atlantic area after the end of the Cold War was a challenging process, and the speakers presented the course of events at that time, from their perspective as witnesses and experts alike.

The discussion, moderated by Ambassador (Ret.) Doru Costea, member of the Scientific Council of the New Strategy Center, was attended by Ambassador Elena Poptodorova, Vice-president of the Atlantic Club Bulgaria, former ambassador of Bulgaria in the US, Ambassador Sergiu Celac, Honorary Chairman of the New Strategy Center and former minister of Foreign Affairs of Romania after the fall of the communist regime in December 1989, and Dr. Przemysław Żurawski vel Grajewski, Member of the Advisory Board of the Centre for Eastern Studies, OSW, Poland.

At its core, a luxury mechanical watch is a triumph of micro-engineering. Imagine a universe contained within a diameter of 30 to 40 millimeters. Hundreds of tiny components—gears, levers, springs, and jewels—coexist in a perfectly orchestrated ballet.

The mainspring stores energy, releasing it with controlled grace through the gear train, its rhythm governed by the hypnotic swing of the balance wheel. This "heart" of the watch, beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour or more, is a miracle of physics and precision.
