The project Addressing the new security threats and challenges in the Black sea: Perspectives for a holistic NATO policy for the region includes the organization of three public events – conferences in each of the Black Sea NATO countries – Bulgaria, Romania and Turkey. At the same time the implementation of the project will contribute to the in-depth analysis of the risk and threats to NATO in the Black Sea and elaboration of a draft comprehensive NATO strategy for the region.
The events will build on the organisations’ existing and upcoming research activity. The consortium will organise a pilot event in Bucharest in January which is not part of the project, focused on the global political and security situation related to the security of the Black Sea region, setting the foundation for a forceful start of the Addressing the new security threats and challenges in the Black Sea: Perspectives for a holistic NATO policy for the region project.
In doing so, the consortium is focused on ensuring that the allocated resources are put to best use, enabling the organisation of events abundant in substance and attractive in form from the very beginning. The two public events will have their specifics and will address a certain range of issues, including but not limited to: Increased force posture and defense capability building to increasing deterrence and collective self-defense; Alliance’s Intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance in the region, Military mobility; NATO’s response to Russian threats in the hybrid warfare domain; NATO coordination with the European Union (EU), Reconstruction of Ukraine and strengthening of the Ukrainian defense capabilities, Enlargements and partnerships, etc.
The final event will contribute to the settling of the Black Sea region at the top of the security agenda, by bringing the project’s findings to the NATO HQ in Brussels. It is crucial that in transformative times there’s a knowledge matrix around the decision making, informing it from a holistic perspective.
