New Strategy Center organised a panel on energy resilience at the Euro-Atlantic Resilience Forum on 28 September, in partnership with the Euro-Atlantic Resilience Centre. The event was a duplex between Bucharest and Kyiv.
Speakers highlighted the importance of energy resilience, how Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova overcame last winter’s problems with the help of the EU and Romania, and how they were subject to energy attacks and blackmail from Russia. The experts also outlined what steps should be taken to cope with another winter of war, and the impact of EU energy sanctions on Russia.
Energy Ministers from Romania and the Republic of Moldova underlined in a video message the importance of the energy dimension in societal resilience, promoting the support Romania and the EU are giving to Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova. Mr Yaroslav Demchenkov, Deputy Minister of Energy of Ukraine also joined the VTC.
The dialogue in Bucharest was moderated by Mr. George Scutaru, CEO, New Strategy Center, and the speakers were: Mr. Tudor Constantinescu, Principal Advisor to the Director General for Energy, European Commission, Mr. Christian Egenhofer,Senior Research Associate, School of Transnational Governance, European University Institute, Florence (Italy) & Associate Senior Research Fellow, Centre for European Policy Studies, Brussels and Mr. Andrei Covatariu, Co-Chair – Digitalization in Energy Task Force | Vice-Chair – Group of Experts on Energy Efficiency, United Nations Economic Commission for Europe.
The dialogue in Kyiv was moderated by Mr. Sergiy Gerasymchuk, Deputy Executive Director, The Foreign Policy Council “Ukrainian Prism” and Mr. Mykhailo Samus, Director New Geopolitics Research Network, and the speakers were: Ms Oksana Ishchuk, Executive Director, Centre for Global Studies Strategy XXI, Mr Andrian Prokip, Director Energy Programs, Institute for the Future and Ms Olga Reznikova, Researcher, National Institute for Strategic Studies.
At the end of the panel, the Ambassador of Romania to Ukraine, H.E. Victor Micula presented his own assessment of the panel’s topic.
