New Strategy Center has organized in London a debate on security challenges in the Black Sea region

New Strategy Center and the Center for American Seapower, Hudson Institute, USA have organized on January 18th, in London, the debate Why the Black Sea Matters. A debate about security challenges in the wider Black Sea region’.

We intended to emphasize the strategic importance of the Black Sea region, which increased after Russia annexed Crimea and after the war in Ukraine and the Russian intervention in Syria, in order to draw attention on the necessity of a strong allies’ support to ensure security and solidarity for the NATO states in the area.

The United Kingdom is an important NATO ally of Romania, as London consistently participated to the terrestrial and naval drills in the Black Sea region. Through this debate, New Strategy Center has emphasized two objectives: a strong commitment of the NATO allies on the Eastern flank and upholding the spirit of Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty.

The event was moderated by Mr. Jonathan Eyal, director for International Relationships at the Royal United Services Institute, UK and Mr. Iulian Fota, member of the Scientific Council of New Strategy Center. The speakers were Mr. Dan Mihalache, Romania’s ambassador to London, Mrs. Deborah Sanders, from the Department for Defense Studies within King’s College London, Mr. Seth Cropsey, director of the Center for American Seapower, Hudson Institute, U.S.A., along with Mr. Sergiu Celac, Mrs. Mihaela Nicola, Mr. Dan Dungaciu, members of the Scientific Council of New Strategy Center.
