New Strategy Center held a meeting on Friday, March 13, with young diplomats from the Western Balkans, Ukraine, and the Republic of Moldova who participated in the Executive Seminar for International Diplomats.
Leonard Orban, a member of the NSC Scientific Council, emphasized that the European Union’s enlargement policy represents one of the EU’s most successful policies. In this context, he presented the evolution of the Central and Eastern European countries that joined the European Union in 2004 and 2007, highlighting in particular the case of Romania in terms of economic development and the European funds attracted by these states.
The prospects of the European Union’s enlargement process for the Western Balkan countries, as well as for the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine, were also analyzed. Leonard Orban stressed that there is political will at the level of the European Union to continue the enlargement process. At the same time, he underlined the need to fulfill the accession criteria, giving particular priority to the political criterion, so that candidate countries can join the European Union well prepared and capable of fully benefiting from the opportunities offered by EU membership.
