Minister of Foreign Affairs, Romania
The discussions began with high praise for Romania’s growing capability to address current security challenges amidst the intensifying conflict. It was highlighted that Romania and its allies have significantly enhanced their response to threats: transitioning from merely identifying drones in the cornfields of the Danube Delta a few years ago to actively countering them today, with the eastern sentry acting as a major gamechanger. Furthermore, the shared goal of achieving a just and lasting peace was reaffirmed, emphasizing that Romania does not stand alone, but together with its allies.
“A couple of years ago, we were looking for drones in the cornfields of the Danube Delta. Now we are actively countering the drones.”
Dan Neculăescu, Minister of Foreign Affairs
Addressing international dialogue and geopolitical developments, the speakers called for a realistic approach, dismissing alarmist narratives regarding the potential disappearance of NATO or the withdrawal of the US. A new pragmatic momentum for Romania was highlighted, featuring national pilots and aircraft directly intercepting drones. Driven by a pragmatic interest in peace in Ukraine, Romania stressed the importance of knowing the direction of the peace process in coordination with the US and Europe, alongside the continuous development of the US-Romania Strategic Partnership.
The panel also underscored Romania’s longstanding role as a hub providing continuous support to Ukraine, which necessitates robust national investments. Special attention was dedicated to reconstruction efforts and the European perspective of the region. Romania strongly insists that the enlargement of the European Union to include Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova is a strategic investment based on individual merit. Ultimately, a call was made to join forces in promoting the strategic importance of the Black Sea and maintaining steadfast support for Ukraine.
