New Strategy Center, in partnership with the Center for Eastern Studies (OSW) in Poland, organized on Wednesday, 13 April a conference dedicated to Romania’s and Poland’s perception of threats to the security of NATO’s Eastern Flank and of Europe as a whole, following Russia’s aggression in Ukraine. At the opening of the event, the importance of this dialogue on topics relevant to the security of Romania and Poland and the constant contribution of the NSC and the OSW to this effort was underlined, with interventions on behalf of Ambassador Cristian Diaconescu, Member of the Scientific Council of the NSC, Romania, and Adam Eberhardt, Director of the OSW, Poland, joined by H.E. Maciej Lang, Polish Ambassador to Bucharest and H.E. Cosmin Onisii, Romanian Ambassador to the Republic of Poland.
The conference’s discussions focused on the consequences of the Russian aggression in Ukraine on NATO’s Eastern Flank and the implications for the security of Romania and Poland. The moderator of the discussion was Adam Eberhardt, OSW, Poland. The speakers of this panel ]were Ambassador Cristian Diaconescu, Member of the Scientific Council of the NSC, Przemysław Żurawski vel Grajewski, Counselor of the Polish Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Silviu Georgescu, Head of NATO Section, Ministry of National Defense, Romania.
Another topic of the event considered the threats that the Republic of Moldova is facing with and developments in the country’s European integration process. The dialog was moderated by Ambassador Doru Costea, a member of the Scientific Council of the NSC. The discussions have benefited from the expertise of Adam Eberhardt, Director, OSW, Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Polish Prime-Minister for supporting reforms in the Republic of Moldova; of Gabriel Mares, Director of the Department for the Republic of Moldova, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Romania and Dan Dungaciu, Member of the Scientific Council of the NSC.
At the end of the conference, George Scutaru, General Director of the NSC, Romania, and Adam Eberhardt, Director of OSW, Poland stressed the need for thorough bilateral cooperation between Romania and Poland, not only against the Russian aggression, but also as actors actively contributing to the European security and to consolidating the credible defense and deterrence position on the Eastern Flank of NATO, as part of the transatlantic unity. NSC and OSW have been developing this format of consultation on topics of common interest since 2018, aiming to contribute in this way to increasing cooperation between Romania and Poland and strengthening the strategic partnership between the two countries.
