NSC in Copenhagen: Event dedicated to the protection of critical offshore infrastructures

New Strategy Center participated in an event dedicated to offshore critical infrastructure in the North Sea on 23-24 November. The symposium took place in Copenhagen, Denmark and was organised by the University of Copenhagen and the University of Edinburgh as part of the Safe Seas initiative, a research network dedicated to maritime security and ocean governance.

At the conference, Sergiu Mitrescu, Programme Director at the NSC, made a presentation on the Black Sea security situation in the context of the war in Ukraine, focusing on critical offshore infrastructure and common threats in the Black Sea and North Sea region.
The NSC pointed to Russia’s aggressive behaviour in the Black Sea, through perimeter blockades, naval presence, electronic warfare to disrupt ship communications, sea mines, all of which have a negative impact on freedom of navigation, but also pose a threat to energy projects and critical offshore infrastructure.

At its core, a luxury mechanical watch is a triumph of micro-engineering. Imagine a universe contained within a diameter of 30 to 40 millimeters. Hundreds of tiny components—gears, levers, springs, and jewels—coexist in a perfectly orchestrated ballet.

The mainspring stores energy, releasing it with controlled grace through the gear train, its rhythm governed by the hypnotic swing of the balance wheel. This "heart" of the watch, beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour or more, is a miracle of physics and precision.
