New Strategy Center participated in the conference “Black Sea: Opportunities and Challenges for Euro-Atlantic Security”, organized on 7 November in Rome by the Romanian Embassy in Italy and The Italian Society for International Organization.
The New Strategy Center was represented by Laurențiu Pachiu, senior associate expert, who gave a presentation in the panel “The Black Sea region’s role in providing energy security”. He emphasized the strategic importance of the Black Sea, including as a crossroads of several energy routes and from the perspective of important offshore energy resources. The discoveries of large quantities of gas in the Black Sea are important for ensuring the region’s energy independence, with Romania set to become the EU’s largest gas producer by 2027. At the same time, the debate also looked at the hybrid threats affecting freedom of navigation and jeopardizing energy projects and connectivity between Europe and Central Asia. Maintaining a free and open Black Sea is vital for the success of energy or connectivity projects.
The panel was moderated by Giorgio Rutelli, Deputy Director, Adnkronos, and the other speakers were Radu Magdin, Analyst, Fabrizio Fabbri, CEO, Ansaldo Energia and Ernesto Ferlenghi, Regional Manager, SAIPEM.
NSC is grateful to H.E. Gabriela Dancău, Romanian Ambassador in Rome, for her support.
