New Strategy Center met on Wednesday, February 26 with students from the US Air War College. LTG (ret.) Viorel Pană and MG (ret.) Paul Hurmuz, NSC Senior Associate Experts, gave presentations on the security situation in the Black Sea region, generated by Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. NATO is facing a complex, volatile and unpredictable security environment in the Black Sea area. Russia’s future trajectory remains unclear, affected by hostility and expansionist aims.
In addition to kinetic actions, Russia is also conducting hybrid warfare, violating freedom of navigation and launching attacks on critical infrastructure in Ukraine near the border with Romania, all of which affect the security of the region.
Romania is carrying out energy projects and it is important to find solutions to protect Romania’s critical infrastructure in the Exclusive Economic Zone together with allies. NSC experts presented concrete proposals for increasing the defense and deterrence posture in the Black Sea area.
