Panel IVa. Dark Clouds over Europe. Is NATO Ready for a Confrontation with Russia?

The Panel was chaired by Mr. Peter WATKINS, Visiting Senior Fellow, LSE Ideas, and was joined by: Lieutenant General (Ret.) Ben HODGES, Member of the International Consultative Board of the New Strategy Center, former Commander of US Army Europe, USA, The Rt Hon Sir Michael FALLON, former Defence Secretary, UK, Ambassador Mihnea MOTOC, former Minister of Defence, Romania and Dr. Tomasz SMURA, Board Member of Casimir Pulaski Foundation, Director of the Defence Track, Warsaw Security Forum, Poland

The discussion explored the current strategic situation in Europe, in a context in which the security guarantees of the United States have been questioned by some voices. Europe is facing a double issue: a material one (its lack of military hardware) as well as a societal one, which amounts to the political leadership and resilience needed in the case of military confrontation. European preparations for the military challenges of the future should focus on countering Russian hybrid warfare, manage deterrence and intelligence sharing, as well as increase the development of unmanned vehicles and other EDTs.

At its core, a luxury mechanical watch is a triumph of micro-engineering. Imagine a universe contained within a diameter of 30 to 40 millimeters. Hundreds of tiny components—gears, levers, springs, and jewels—coexist in a perfectly orchestrated ballet.

The mainspring stores energy, releasing it with controlled grace through the gear train, its rhythm governed by the hypnotic swing of the balance wheel. This "heart" of the watch, beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour or more, is a miracle of physics and precision.
