30 Years Since the Dissolution of the USSR. The Consequences for Russia

On Wednesday, 15 December 2021, New Strategy Center organized the third debate of the series dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the disappearance of the Soviet Union.
„30 Years Since the Dissolution of the USSR. The Consequences for Russia” focused on analyzing how the Russians went through the entire process that led to the dissolution of the USSR, which for them meant ”glasnosti și perestroika” and the reforms started by Mihail Gorbaciov. At the same time, the discussion targeted the first years of the new Russian Federation and Russians’ hopes for the evolution of their own state, as well as how it came to the present Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin to believe that “the disappearance of the USSR was the biggest geopolitical cataclysm of the 20th century”.

Moderated by Ambassador Sergiu Celac, the Honorary Chairman of the New Strategy Center, the debated benefited from Dr. Andrei Illarionov’s contribution, an eminent Russian economist former economic policy advisor to the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, between 2000 and 2005, currently Senior Fellow at the Center of Security Policy, Washington DC, USA.

At its core, a luxury mechanical watch is a triumph of micro-engineering. Imagine a universe contained within a diameter of 30 to 40 millimeters. Hundreds of tiny components—gears, levers, springs, and jewels—coexist in a perfectly orchestrated ballet.

The mainspring stores energy, releasing it with controlled grace through the gear train, its rhythm governed by the hypnotic swing of the balance wheel. This "heart" of the watch, beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour or more, is a miracle of physics and precision.
