The New Strategy Center attended the workshop “Implications of Developments in Synthetic Biology and Generative AI for International Security”, taking place on 26-27 August 2024 and hosted by the Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP).
On behalf of the NSC, Major General (Retired) Paul Hurmuz, Senior associate expert, took part in the debates, stressing the importance of engagement between Allied and Partner countries in dealing with these risks and threats, in the larger context of the Emerging and Disruptive Technologies.
Dr. Kate Sixt, Principal Director for Biotechnology in the U.S. Department of Defense provided the opening remarks of the workshop.
The event was organised by the Partnership for Peace Consortium (PfPC) of Defense Academies and Security Studies Institutes. This is a voluntary association of institutes of higher learning in defense and security affairs, which links over 800 defense academies and security institutes in 59 countries.
The cooperation with GCSP follows the participation of Dr. Jean-Marc Rickli, Head of Global and Emerging Risks, in May 2024, during the NSC flagship event “Black Sea and Balkans Security Forum”.
