New Strategy Center participated at the “Independence Day Forum” conference, organized on July 5 in Sinaia by the former US Ambassador to Romania, H. E. Adrian Zuckerman and Alexandrion Group, an event dedicated to the bilateral relations between the US and Romania and the challenges in the context of the current war in Ukraine.
George Scutaru, New Strategy Center CEO, participated as a speaker on the panel dedicated to security issues in the Black Sea region, together with Adrian Cioroianu, former Minister of Foreign Affairs and Thomas Ulrich Brechbuhl, former US State Department advisor and Acting Undersecretary for Public Diplomacy. The event was moderated by journalist Sabin Orcan, Newsweek Romania.
George Scutaru mentioned the need for a long-term and predictable US strategy dedicated to the Black Sea region, which is why it is important that this year the US Congress votes on the initiative of Senators Shaheen and Romney, which calls on the US administration to adopt a multi-pronged strategy dedicated to the Black Sea.
Whether we have a Ukrainian victory over the next year or a longer war of attrition, an American presence in the Black Sea is necessary. Even if Russia is defeated, it will not automatically become a democratic state, and we are likely to face hybrid threats after the conflict is over.
In the process of rebuilding Ukraine, Romania has the advantage of proximity, but also of energy reserves. From 2027, Romania will become the largest gas producer in the EU, and foreign companies will be able to invest in Romania, gaining access to cheap and long-term gas, and to participate from Romania in Ukraine’s reconstruction process.
