With the occasion of the upcoming 2024 Austrian national elections, New Strategy Center publishes a study analysing the key political parties, their platforms, and the potential foreign policy implications of the election results. Central to the analysis is Austria’s unique position of neutrality, its close economic ties to Russia, and its relationship with the European Union. The study explores how different political forces, particularly the far-right Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ), leverage these relationships to shape their rhetoric and policy proposals. Additionally, it looks at the possible coalition scenarios that could emerge from the election, taking into account how the result could influence Austria’s position on multiple policies. By analyzing public opinion, party platforms, and Austria’s evolving geopolitical challenges, the study provides insights into how the election could impact Austria’s domestic policies, its stance towards the EU, including Schengen expansion with Romania and Bulgaria and sanctions on Russia, especially in light of the ongoing war in Ukraine.
