Presidential elections in Romania and the battle between West and East

New Strategy Center publishes an analysis of the presidential elections in Romania, the first round of which took place on November 24. The surprise was the first position, with 22.95%, of Călin Georgescu, an independent candidate with pro-Russian and Eurosceptic views, and the second position of Elena Lasconi, the candidate of the opposition Union Save Romania. The vote represents, first and foremost, an anti-system protest against the mainstream parties in government since the fall of communism and until now. At the same time, Călin Georgescu’s placement in first place arouses some suspicions of Russian influence, as until a month ago he had no visibility, being placed in the polls with a maximum of 5% and was intensively promoted on social media, in particular on Tik Tok, especially in the last 2 weeks.
On December 1 parliamentary elections will be held in Romania, and on December 8 the second round of the presidential elections will take place.
The analysis was written by George Scutaru, CEO, New Strategy Center.
