NSC Study: “Security implications of new gas discoveries in the Black Sea and the Eastern Mediterranean”

New Strategy Center presents today the study “Security implications of new gas discoveries in the Black Sea and the Eastern Mediterranean”, conducted in collaboration with the Greek Energy Forum (GEF) at the Delphi Economic Forum, Greece.

The authors of the paper, Sergiu Mitrescu, Program Director of New Strategy Center and Michalis Mathioulakis, Academic Director of GEK analysed the new offshore projects in the Black Sea and Eastern Mediterranean from a geostrategic perspective, x-raying the strategic opportunities and dangers associated with implementing such investments in a contested security environment. The two regional sub-systems form a strategic continuum, fraught with a similar set of challenges, which become all the more evident in the context of offshore projects aimed at extracting hydrocarbons from offshore Exclusive Economic Zones of the riparian countries. Their energy potential brings with it new hybrid risks, ranging from lawfare tactics to acts of sabotage or limiting freedom of navigation. Energy security thus becomes synonymous with the ability of NATO and its member states to create a secure regional maritime environment that allows for compliance with international law
