New Strategy Center, together with the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (NUPI), is publishing a series of studies related to the security situation in the Black Sea and the Arctic, produced as part of a project funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Defence.
The main aim of the project was to analyse the impact that Russia’s increased military presence in the Black Sea region and the war in Ukraine have had on the security of NATO’s Eastern flank. Beyond this, NSC and NUPI experts also considered how this new security context affects regions such as the Arctic. Three studies have been prepared to examine these issues from different perspectives.
The first study examined elements of continuity and change in Russia’s approach to the Black Sea region, using the situation around Snake Island to analyse these issues. The second study looked at the impact that developments in the Black Sea region have had on perceptions of security in the High North, an area where Russia’s policies also pose more challenges for Western policy-makers. Last but not least, the third paper focused on Russia’s Black Sea policy, reviewing the Kremlin’s approach before and after the war and offering some scenarios for the future.
These papers are the result of the implementation of the work carried out as part of the project “Black Sea: Militarization, frozen conflicts and Hybrid Warfare”, funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Defence.
